Description
Spirit Lake, the signature lake of Mt st Helens, was displaced by the debris-avalanche dring the catclysmic eruption of Mt. St.Helens on May 18, 1980. The avalanche displaced the lake approximately 800 feet eastward up the hill. The bottom of the lake increased in altitude as much as 295 feet while the surface level increased in altitude by 200 feet, causing the surface area to increase from 1300 acres to 2200 acres. Spirit Lake can be viewed from Johnston Ridge, ooking across Harrys Ridge, as in this photograph. Windy Ridge is visible across the lake in a south and easterly direction. Prior to the eruption the lake was located at the base of the mountain in a northerly direction. The timber on the ridges seen here was all flattened by the volcanic blast.
