Description
This massive basalt cliff resulting from a lava flow along the Firehole River in Yellowstone National Park tell only part of the story of the volcanic creation of the park. The Firehole River flows along the base of one of the Yellowstone caldera. While we were visiting the falls we could see several people swimming in the "Swimming Hole." The swimmers said that the water was actually very hot. You can see the caves where the roaring Firestone River undermined the basalt layers to create the caves. The young lodgepole pine trees came back following the devastating 1988 fire in Yellowstone National Park.
