Three First Day of Issue envelopes were released by the United States Post Office bearing a March 1, 1972 postmark with the National Parks Centennial 8 cent stamp with an image of Old Faithful to commemorate the 100th Anniversary, Centennial Anniversary, of the National Park Service. Yellowstone National Park was the World's First National Park, created by Ulysses S. Grant. Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 3,468.4 square miles comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America and is centered over the Yellowstone Caldera, the largest supervolcano on the continent. The caldera is considered an active volcano.
