Description
The sign at Isa Lake shows a map of and describes the Continental Divide. Isa Lake is located on the highway from Grant Village to Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. Isa Lake straddles the Continental Divide at Craig Pass. From this snow-fed hollow, Isa Lake drains in two different directions – from directly astride the Continental Divide. The lake is one of the few natural lakes in the world that drain to two different oceans. The lake’s west arm feeds the Firehole River on its way to the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers and Gulf of Mexico. The lake’s east outlet leads to the Snake and Columbia Rivers and the Pacific Ocean via Yellowstone’s Shoshone River and Lewis River. The great rivers begin with very little drama. Except for spring runoff, Isa Lake’s water flow is mostly seepage.
The great yellow pond lily thrives in the lake. As we drove along the shore of the shallow lake, we could hear the frogs croaking on the lily pads growing in the lake.
