Description
An amazing geologic picture is told by the rugged rocks and cliffs of Northrup Canyon in Steamboat Rock State Park. The underlying whitish rock is the granite rock of the Okanogan Highlands which formed the prehistoric continental shelf of the United States. This was later overlaid by the darker basalt of the Pleistocene era volcanoes. The Great Missoula Ice Age Flood then roared through the Northrup Creek canyon, gouging out the canyon, exposing the distinct layers of rounded and jagged granite and basalt. Douglas fir and Ponderosa Pine grow where they can find a little bit of soil clinging to the cliffs. The grandeur of this spectacular formation and the stark beauty can be found no where else in the world.
