Description
The green desert hills are reflected in the calm water of the Columbia River on the Washington side of the Columbia River National Scenic Area near Lyle, Washington. The steep basalt cliffs were carved by the Ice Age Floods that scoured the Pacific Northwest. The hills are lake bed deposits and loess from a temporary lake impounded by a narrow gap in the gorge.
