Description
Mt Washington in the Oregon Cascade Mountain Range rises to a height of 7,794 feet. The predominately Lodgepole Pine forests of the Willamette National Forest struggling for survival on the vast lava fields were burned in devastating fire about three years ago. It was devoid of its usual snow cap in this photograph taken in late July. According to Wikipedia, Mt Washington is unique in that it is a deeply eroded shield volcano in the Cascade Range of Oregon. The mountain dates to the Late Pleistocene. However, it does have a line of basaltic andesite spatter cones on its northeast flank which are approximately 1,330 years old according to carbon dating. The main peak is a volcanic plug that was heavily eroded by glaciers in the last ice age.
