Artist's Description

I found this old postcard of Mound City Group National Monument, now known as Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, located at Chillicothe, Ohio, in a second hand store in Prosser, Washington. While I was growing up in Chillicothe, Ohio, Mound City was one of our favorite picnic areas. I played on the mounds. Access to the mounds is now restricted and can only be viewed from the new Hopewell Culture National Historical Park Visitor Center. The Park Service website says that "Earthen mounds and embankments forming huge geometric enclosures grace the landscape of the Ohio River Valley. These monumental structures were built by Native American hands almost 2,000 years ago. Hopewellian people gathered at these earthworks for feasts, funerals and rites of passage. Come learn about these sacred spaces and reflect upon the lives of these American Indians."
