Artist's Description

The Lady Washington made port in Pasco, Washington, in August, 2015.
Description taken from the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority website:

The Lady Washington was originally commissioned as a 90-ton sloop with one mast. As part of the Columbia Expedition, She left the Boston Harbor on October 1, 1787. She sailed around Cape Horn and participated in the Maritime Fur Trade with the coastal Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest and in tea and porcelain across the Pacific in China. She was the first American-flagged vessel to round Cape Horn. She was the first recorded vessel to make landfall on the Oregon coast near Tillamook, Oregon.

She was captained by Robert Gray and later by John Kendrick. Under the command of Kendrick, she was refitted as a brigantine with two masts in 1790-1791 while in Macao, China.

The Washington became the first American vessel to reach Japan and remained in the Pacific trade. She eventually foundered in the Phili...
