Description
I found this old postcard of "The First State House of Ohio,Chillicothe, 1800." It was the capitol of the Territory Northwest of the Ohio River, or commonly known as the Northwest Territory, before Ohio became a state in 1803. The State House was located on the corner of Paint and Main Streets in downtown Chillicothe where the Ross County Courthouse is today. The Chillicothe Gazette building on Main Street is a replica of the State House. The postcard was mailed from Chillicothe in 1928 with a one-cent stamp. A building identical to this one was the first state capitol building of Indiana when it became the 19th state in 1816. The capitol of Indiana at that time was at Corydon. The Indiana government did not move the current capitol in Indianapolis until 1824. The building at Corydon is preserved as an Indiana Historic Site.
