Thank you for the feature in the Badlands National Park Group.

Artist's Description

A massive slump created the unique formation seen here in Badlands National Park. A massive block of rock broke loose, or slumped, from the limestone cliffs because of water trickling through the soft porous limestone. The block fell with such force that it compacted the softer rock making it less porous thus slowing the drainage. Because the soil was less porous and retained more moisture the area was able to support the small forest of fir trees as seen here. It really looks out of place in the stark landscape of the rest of the Badlands.
