During the Vietnam War in 1967 and 1968, this little 75mm howitzer harassed the troops stationed at Camp Carroll and those within its range in Quang Tri province near the border of the DMZ in the northern part of South Vietnam. Any of the troops stationed in that area at that time will remember the incoming artillery from the little gun. We could expect to be hit any time that troops would gather, such as when we would line up at the Post Exchange (PX) or at the mess hall. The Marines at Camp Carroll captured the howitzer in July 1968 shortly after the siege at Khe Sanh during Tet Offensive. It had alluded being captured because the recoil when it was fired would cause it to roll back into a cave on Dong Ha Mountain, so that no one could see it.
It is rather ironic that the name plate on the howitzer says that it was made by General Electric in 1943. It had probably been captured from the French during the French Indochina War.
