Description
A clump of Dwarf Mistletoe, Arceuthobium campylopodium, growing on a Ponderosa Pine at Ft Spokane at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. Dwarf Mistletoe is a parasite that grows on many of the coniferous trees in the Western United States. If left unchecked it actually kill the tree. Herbicides are generally ineffective in controlling the mistletoe. The most effective way is to remove the infected branches on larger trees or removing completely smaller trees; however, that can be expensive and very labor intensive. It is rather strange looking when viewed up close.
