Artist's Description

The Torrey Pine, the rarest pine in North America, has 6-8 inch cones with seeds similar to pinion nuts. However, unlike the other pinion pines, the Torrey Pines have five elongated needles in a bundle. The other pinion pines typically have only two needles in a bundle. A unique feature of the Torrey Pine needles is that they have a very deep groove running the length of the needle facilitating the capture of moisture from the coastal fogs and funneling the moisture down to the roots of the tree.
