Description
The building was built as a residence in Bainbridge, Ohio, approximately 20 miles west of Chillicothe on the Cincinnati Pike, US Hwy 50, in 1815. Dr. John Harris moved to Bainbridge in 1819 and began teaching dentistry out of the residence in 1827, thus starting the first dental college in the United States. The small town of Bainbridge in Ross County, Ohio, has been referred to as the Cradle of Dental Education. The school operated until 1830. In 1968 it was opened as a Dental Museum and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. A visit to the museum makes one realize how much dentistry has advanced. Some of the original equipment and tools on display look much like you might expect to find in a blacksmith shop.
