Description
The Stonehenge War Memorial at Maryhill, Washington, was built in 1918 by Sam Hill and dedicated in 1929 to honor the brave young men from Klickitat County, who gave their life in World War I. The structure was constructed as a replica in size and form of the original Stonehenge on the Salisbury Plain at Wiltshire, England. Like the original it can be used to measure time and mark the seasons from the position of the sun. A plaque inside shows the position of the sun and moon throughout the year. Sam Hill constructed a town at this location, but there is little evidence of the original townsite remaining. The present day Village of Maryhill is located on the river at the bottom of the hill.
