Description
Skunk Cabbage blooming in the wetlands at Longmire Meadow heralds the coming of spring. The flowers are produced on long a spadix, which is a type of inflorescence having small flowers borne on a fleshy stem. Spadices are typical of the family Araceae in which the spadices, or flowers, are borne within a spathe or bract. The spathe is the showy yellow portion of the plant. The flowers are borne on an underground rhizome typically in wet areas.
