Description
Out burst floods are a common occurence as the winter snows melt from the glaciers on Mt Rainer. This is an example of the geoplogic debris and the destructive force of the 2009 outburst, of lahar, in the spring of 2009 from Tahoma Glacier, one of the largest glaciers, which rushed down Tahoma Creek. The piles of huge rocks and fallen trees are strewn everwhere as you look up Tahoma Creek from what remains of West Side Road, which was completely washed out as a result of the debris avalanche and churning water. At the time that I shot this photograph in July 2009, Tahoma Creek had been completely displaced and was flowing through the live trees to the right or east of the original creek bed. The standing dead trees were killed by the flood. The lower bark of many of the trees was stripped off by the avalanche.
