Description
I recently discovered these strange blue jelly-like blobs on an Oregon beach. I believe that they are a type of drifting predatory hydrozoan.
They are commonly known by the names sea raft, by-the-wind sailor, purple sail, little sail, or simply Velella, or as Blue Velella, The scientific name is Velella velella. Their blue triangular sail enables them to travel by drifting on the surface to find prey.
They very often become stranded in the hundreds on the Oregon beaches, often in a bed of kelp as is this one,
