The Teapot Dome Scandal was an incident that took place in the United States from 1920 to 1923 during the administration of President Warren G. Harding. Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall leased Navy petroleum reserves at the Teapot Dome in Wyoming and two other locations in California to private companies without competitive bidding in 1922 and 1923. The leases became the subject of an investigation by Senator Thomas Walsh. Secretary Fall was convicted in 1927 of accepting bribes from the oil companies. Before the Watergate Scandal, the Teapot Dome Scandal was regarded as the greatest and most sensational scandal in the history of American Politics. Jack Ainsworth built the Teapot Dome service station in 1922 in protest next to his father�s store on Highway 12 near Zillah, Washington. When Interstate 82 was constructed in the 1978, the �Dome� was moved approximately one mile to the west along Highway 12, which became known as the Yakima Valley Highway. It was placed on the National Historic Register in 1985. After service was discontinued, the �Dome� was purchased by the City of Zillah in 2007 and moved to its present location in downtown Zillah in 2012.
