The Grays River Covered Bridge, located in Wahkiakum County, Washington, was built in 1905 for cattle and wagons by H.P. Ahlberg, who was a dairy farmer with land on both sides of the river. He covered the bridge in 1906, because it was too slick for livestock to cross safely. It is a single span Howe truss timber bridge with a span of 155 ft. Mr. Ahlberg returned to Sweden in 1911, however much of the property is now owned by his daughters family, who still live on the north side of the river. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The bridge was restored in 1988 after it fell into disrepair and was opened to the public. It is the only covered bridge in Washington still in use by the public. The beaurtiful Willapa Hills can be seen in the background.
