Description
Grave Creek Covered Bridge was constructed in 1920 by Elmer Nelson on Josephine County's first donation land claim. James H. Twogood laid out the claim in 1851 and named it Grave Creek Ranch. The small town of Leland was incorporated at the site in 1855. Grave Creek is the site of the grave of Martha Leland Crowley, who traveled to Oregon on the first wagon train over the Applegate Trail, the southern route, in 1846. The party camped on the north side of the creek, then known as Woodpile Creek, where she tragically died at the age of sixteen of typhoid fever. Her grave is nearby. The bridge is the only covered bridge still existing in Josephine County, Oregon.
