Description
Wasteland or sanctuary? The badlands of South Dakota are an amazing geologic anomaly of eroded prairie, limestone peaks, and valleys forming a palette of colors. Badlands National Park is a national park in southwestern South Dakota that protects 242,756 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires blended with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. The park is managed by the National Park Service. It was established in January 1939 as a National Monument and designated as a National Park in November 1978.
