Description
This Birch Mazegill Fungus is growing at the base of the birch tree stump in my yard. It appears as if it could be a mini-garden growing on the wings of a butterfly. The fungus is classified as species Lenzites betulinus in Phylum Basidomycota, Class Agaricomycetes, Order Polyporales, and Family Polyporaceae. It appears to be a characteristic of the fungus that the top is seemingly eroded producing the effect of a mini- garden growing out of the fungus. There are dandelion plants and what I think might be Osculara, a variety of ice plant, growing in the "garden."
