Description
Beacon Rock, standing at 848 feet, rises above the beautiful Columbia River at North Bonneville. If you look closely you can see the rock stairway ascending the to the top of the rock. Beacon Rock was observed and named by Lewis and Clark in October, 1805. They measured the fluctuation of the tide on the rock and realized that they were getting close to their destination at the mouth of the Columbia River. The interesting thing about this observation is that Beacon Rock is aproximately 130 miles upriver from the mouth of the Columbia River at the Pacific Ocean. The average elevation of the river in the Beacon Rock area is apprroximately 25 feet above sea level, so the river was probably backing up behind the force of the incoming tide.
