Description
The lateral volcanic blast of the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens created a turbulent stone filled wind that swept over ridges and literally ripped the trees from the ground over a 230 square mile area extending 17 miles to the northwest of the mountains. The huge old growth trees were laid out like straws as far as the eye can see in this view from Johnston Ridge today. Even today, 32 years later, there is little change. Prior to the eruption the hills and mountains seen here were thickly forested with a sea of green trees.
