Description
In July 2012 when I visited the Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument there was a new eruption, an eruption of Tent Caterpillars, Malacosoma sp. The tents and the creepy critters were everywhere, in the trees, hanginig from the trees, on the ground, on the trails, on the picnic tables, ... They are investing the Red Alder trees, which is a pioneer species growing back into the devasted areas after the May 18, 1980 eruption. Because the Volcanic Monument site is being preserved in its natural state, no action is anticipated to control the outbreak, but the scientists at the site do not expect any long term effects, since most such outbreaks simply die out on therir own. Later this summer the air around the volcano will be filled with creamy white moths. I think that I prefer moths over caterpillars.
